WOMAN WAYS
HIGH GEAR/JULY 1977

Among the many stereotypes about gay women is a new one, namely that lesbians are terrific music makers. It seems true, however, a more realistic view would be that given the support and an open, creative environment, women can write and
produce high quality music. Many of us have waited a long time for music which articulates the emotions and sensuality unique to the love between women and now it's here. Olivia records has been active in providing a forum for women
musicians and Teresa Trull's
album, The Ways a Woman Can Be, is their latest accomplishment.
The album is pleasing in many aspects. The recording has a fuller sound and more faithful reproduction of vocals and instrumentals than some of
Olivia's earlier productions.
Teresa's voice is beautiful as she winds her way through the eight cuts ranging from blues to country. The background vocals and instrumentals are artfully blended lending the music a
very natural, yet professional, sound.
The first two tracks, "I'd Like To Make Love With You" and "Second Chance" pinpoint what we would say when trying to help a friend open up to the idea of a woman-woman relationship. Feminist political views are not absent from the album with "Don't Say Sister" making a strong plea, tinged with bitterness (e.g. "... give me a knife
and watch me use it 'cause we got a pain that spans all time."), for a firm feminism.
commitment to
The album's high points are "Grey Day," a celebration of Hope She'll See," which support in lesbian relationships, Teresa terms a "torch song", and "Sister I Love You," a rock number.
when
For those of us who sing along with the stereo we're home with the blues, Teresa sums it all up in "Woman-Loving Women" written for that express purpose. "Some folks think Sappho was a little touched. Well, I think Sappho just loved that touch we all love so much." Right on, Teresa.
